Internet Map Server Description
The USGS Channel Islands Internet Map Server contains published data layers and information from the U.S. Geological Survey, Coastal and Marine Geology Program (CMGP). Many of the data layers presented here were collected as part of USGS research project conducted in the sanctuary since 1999. USGS activities have been to map the marine geological environment with the focus on the the broad, flat continental shelf between Point Arguello to the north and Point Dume to the south and around the northern Channel Islands. The default map view shows the boundary of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, California state waters boundary, and the location and coverage extent of the completed sidescan sonar mosaics and multibeam backscatter surveys. Within the Internet Map Server, data layers have been grouped within category headings. Clicking the appropriate data folder will expand or collapse the folder allowing the individual data layers to be displayed. Data layers may be "turned-off or on" by selecting the visible button beside the layer name. The map view will automatically update. A complete description of the available data layers and links to download the data may be found in the GIS Data Catalog. Other basemap data relative to the specific mapsite have been compiled from a variety of public domain sites and are also available for viewing and download. |
