The USGS Southwest Washington Coastal Erosion Study Internet Map Server contains published data layers and information from the U.S. Geological Survey, Coastal and Marine Geology Program (CMGP). Many of the data layers presented here were collected as part of USGS research project conducted in the region during 1997 and 1998. The study area extends approximately 160 km along the United States' Pacific Northwest coast between Tillamook Head, Oregon and Point Grenville, Washington. USGS activities have been to map the marine geological environment of the inner shelf with the focus on coastal erosion along the southwest coast of Washington. The focus of the was to enhance our knowledge of fundamental coastal sediment dynamics to reduce increasingly costly problems and losses for the southwest Washington coast. This research is crucial to minimizing hazards and economic impacts associated with both chronic and catastrophic coastal erosion.

The default map view shows the coastline of Washington stte, the boundary of the initial study area, the expanded study area, location of CORLISS (98014) grab samples, and interpretation of sand dollars. Within the Internet Map Server, data layers have been grouped within category headings.  Clicking the appropriate data folder will expand or collapse the folder allowing the individual data layers to be displayed. Data layers may be "turned-off or on" by selecting the visible button beside the layer name. The map view will automatically update. A complete description of the available data layers and links to download the data may be found in the GIS Data Catalog.

Other basemap data relative to the specific mapsite have been compiled from a variety of public domain sites and are also available for viewing and download.

The data layers listed below have associated hyperlink properties. When the data layer is selected as the active data layer, selecting the hyperlink activity will result in the associated information being displayed in a new browser window.

  • Seismic Navigation - The user may view a reduced version of the seismic record associated with the individual seismic cruise tracklines by utilizing the hyperlink option. With either the 1997 Seismic Navigation or 1998 Seismic Navigation selected as the active data layer, select the hyperlink tool from the menu at the left of the map view. When active, click on an individual trackline. A reduced image showing the available seismic record will be displayed in a separate browser window.
