The USGS Monterey Bay Region Internet Map Server contains published data layers and information from the U.S. Geological Survey, Coastal and Marine Geology Program (CMGP). Many of the data layers presented here were collected as part of USGS research project conducted from 1994 - 2000 that was to determine the marine geological environment and environmental processes in the sanctuary, an area of 13,760 sq km (5300 sq mi) area.  The USGS study area was on the broad, flat continental shelf, areas shallower than 200 m (656 ft), between San Francisco to the north and Point Sur to the south.  This area is approximately 3,000 sq km (1,160 sq mi) or 20 percent of the areal extent of the sanctuary.

In addition to the location of various sidescan data, location of surficial samples, navigation tracklines and other interpretive data layers are also available for viewing. Other basemap data relative to the specific mapsite have been compiled from a variety of public domain sites and are also available for viewing and download.

Hyperlink properties

The data layers listed below have associated hyperlink properties. When the data layer is selected as the active data layer, selecting the hyperlink activity will result in the associated information being displayed in a new browser window.

• Coastal Photos - The user may view the photographs documenting the coastal morphology and stratigraphy between Point Año Nuevo and Santa Cruz, California by utilizing the hyperlink option. With "Coastal Photos" selected as the active data layer, select the hyperlink tool from the menu at the left of the map view. When active, click on an point location. The photograph, as released in U.S. Geological Survey DDS-61, will be displayed in a separate browser window.
• quad75 - The user may view a detail image of the backscatter mosaic by utilizing the hyperlink option. With "quad75" selected as the active data layer, select the hyperlink tool from the menu at the left of the map view. When active, click on an individual mosaic square. A higher resolution image of that area will be displayed in a separate browser window.
