The USGS Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho Internet Map Server contains published data layers and information from the U.S. Geological Survey,Coastal and Marine Geology Program (CMGP). The data layers presented here were collected as part of a USGS field work conducted in September 2002. The project was a cooperative with other researchers from several universities who have been studying the sediments of Bear Lake since 1996. This research relates to a variety of human concerns, including water usage in the Bear River basin.

An example of the Bear Lake Internet Map Server map view is shown above. This map view shows the Bear Lake sidescan sonar mosaic with CHIRP navigation track lines, the extent of Bear Lake (in blue) and a shaded relief image created from available Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data of the surrounding Idaho and Utah region.

Data layers may be "turned-off or on" by selecting the visible button beside the layer name. The map view will automatically update. A complete description of the available data layers are listed in the GIS Data Catalog.

The data layers listed below have associated hyperlink properties. When the data layer is selected as the active data layer, selecting the hyperlink activity will result in the associated information being displayed in a new browser window.

  • Chirp Tracklines - The user may view a reduced version of the seismic record associated with the individual seismic cruise tracklines by utilizing the hyperlink option. With a "Chirp Tracklines" selected as the active data layer, select the hyperlink tool from the menu at the left of the map view. When active, click on an individual trackline.  A reduced image showing the available seismic record will be displayed in a separate browser window.
