The USGS Mississippi Fan Internet Map Server contains published data layers and information from various the Coastal and Marine Geology Program (CMGP) research projects studying processes associated with recent deposition and the deep sea-fan system on the Mississippi Fan.  An example of the default map view is shown at the right. This map view shows a portion of the Gulf of Mexico Geologic LOng-Range Inclined Asdic (GLORIA) sidescan data, the coverage and extent of the SeaMARC 1A sidescan sonar mosaic and the location of various cores collected during the field activity in 1990.

Other basemap data layers relative to the specific mapsite have been compiled from a variety of public domain sites and are also available for viewing and download.

Within the Internet Map Server, data layers have been grouped within category headings. Clicking the appropriate data folder will expand or collapse the folder allowing the individual data layers to be displayed. Data layers may be "turned-off or on" by selecting the visible button beside the layer name. The map view will automatically update. A complete description of the available data layers and links to download the data may be found in the GIS Data Catalog.

The data layers listed below have associated hyperlink properties. When the data layer is selected as the active data layer, selecting the hyperlink activity will result in the associated information being displayed in a new browser window.

  • cores - During the R/V FARNELLA 90-4 (90003) a total of 67 cores were collected and described. Additional visual descriptive core information is available for forty-three of the cores utilizing the hyperlink option for this data layer. Where available, the descriptive information also provide links to their x-rays. When the core's layer is selected as the active layer, the user should select the hyperlink feature to view additional core information. Select the hyperlink option from the tools menu then click on the core location. A separate web browser window will open with the additional information.
