Please note that using the browser's Refresh button reloads the Internet Map Server (IMS) Web page, causing you to lose any changes to your map such as zooms to the extent or new layers.

Also note that you must "refresh" the map view after selecting a data layer for viewing or removal from the view. The Refresh Map button is located at the bottom and the top of the Table of Contents frame.

Below is a list of the complete set of available tools. Depending on the configuration of the individual Internet Map Server site it is possible that not all of the tools will be available. Click the icons below for detailed description and help with using an individual tool.

Internet Map Server tool icon: Toggle Legend Toggle Legend: Toggles between a standard legend and a data layer list in the right most map view frame. By default, the data layer list is displayed. The standard legend shows the layer name and the symbol(s) used to draw each layer. Select the data layer list to add/remove map layers and to set an active layer for hot-linking, identifying, and making queries. The default map view shows the data layer list. The user must select the Toggle Legend icon to switch between the data layer list and the standard legend.

The data layer lists all available data layers in a map and are listed to the left of the map in the Table of Contents. The legend shows the layer name and Visible and Active selection boxes. The Visible check box next to each layer indicates whether it is currently turned on or off in the map. In other words, whether a specific data layer it is currently drawn on the map or not.

The order in which the layers are listed in the legend is important. The layers at the top of the legend are drawn on top of those below it. Layers that form the background of your map are listed at the bottom of the legend. The CMGP Internet Map Server utilizes an Image Service. Unfortunately with an Image Server, the user may not modify the order of the data layers. The optimum selection order has been selected when creating the map view.

You can turn the legend off by clicking the View menu and unchecking the Legend choice. Please note, if you have selected to turn off the "Auto Refresh" option, you must Refresh Map to view your changes.

To use this option select an "Active" and "Visible" data layer from the Table of Contents then click on a feature to get extended information. For example, select the GLORIA mosaic index as the Active layer from the U.S. Atlantic East Coast IMS and then select the Hyperlink tool to select and view a two degree GLORIA mosaic image. By clicking within a mosaic index square, a higher resolution image for that area will be displayed in a new browser window. This tool may also be used to view items such as bottom photos that have been linked with the particular data layer. The user should consult the "More Information" page for any data layers within the map view that may be utilized with the Hyperlink tool.

Internet Map Server tool icon: Identify Identify: The Identify tool allows you to get attribute information about a feature by clicking on it. Select and then click on a feature to get basic information. The information returned will be from the active layer. Results from the Identify tool appears in the lower panel of the HTML Viewer.

  1. Click a layer in the legend to make it active.

  2. Click the Identify button.

The Query Builder queries features based on their attribute values. Numeric or text are acceptable search strings. You must use single quotes around values that are text strings.

You can calculate statistics on the results of your query by clicking the Statistics button. If a feature is found a new map will be drawn that is zoomed into the feature and the selected features will be displayed in yellow.

The Query Builder generates a simple set of statistics. On the Select a field to get statistics dialog, you can click the Use Query Results? check box to only calculate statistics on the selected records.

The results of a query can be saved to a text file using the Save Results button. In the Save dialog box, type the name of the file with a .txt extension.

Internet Map Server tool icon: Measure Measure: Measure distances on the map. Click the button to define the first point and then click again to define the second point. Repeat for each segment. The segment and total measures appear in the upper left corner of the map. Select another tool to end measuring.

Internet Map Server tool icon: Set UnitsSet Units: Click the button and select a new distance unit. This will affect the scalebar, measuring, and buffering. The default value is feet.
